Beginning February 6, 2024, Maryland’s business taxpayers will be able to access a new service from the Office of the Comptroller: Maryland Tax Connect!
As part of the Comptroller’s ongoing modernization project, Maryland Tax Connect is a self-service portal that is a secure and user-friendly option to file and pay state taxes online, as well as to interact with the Comptroller’s office. This service is currently limited to business owners and is not available for individual income tax, pass-through entities, trusts, or estates.
If you’re an existing bFile user, be on the lookout for your welcome letter in the mail from the Comptroller’s office. These letters were mailed in early February and contain information about the new portal, as well as a PIN that should be used to register for Maryland Tax Connect. There is also the ability to log in and pay business taxes as a guest before receiving a PIN.
The initial rollout will cover the following taxes for business owners:
- Sales & Use
- Withholding (Payroll)
- Motor Fuel
- Admissions & Amusement
- Bay Restoration Fee
- Tire Fee
- Tobacco
- Cannabis
- Alcohol – payment only!
- C-Corp – payment only!
The portal is designed to allow taxpayers to complete several simple and vital functions themselves, accessible from either a mobile device or on desktop, including:
- Making online payments
- Updating personal information
- Retrieving tax information
- Filing returns
- Viewing filing and tax history
- Registering a business
- Applying for or renewing business licenses
- Applying for sales and use tax exemption certificates
One of the incentives of engaging with Maryland Tax Connect is CPAs and other professionals can register as a third-party administrator. Taxpayers can provide their advisors with access at various levels to their Maryland Tax Connect account. The advisors will need to provide the taxpayer with their User ID and confirmation number.
We encourage business owners to explore the Maryland Tax Connect Portal Information page on the Comptroller’s website. There you will find user guides, video tutorials, and some of the most frequently asked questions to make navigating the Maryland Tax Connect platform and the online filing process easier. As always, our tax professionals are available to answer any question you may have and help you make the right decisions for you and your business.
