Ellin & Tucker Celebrates Baltimore Not-for-Profits Through 3rd Annual “Week of Caring”

Baltimore, Md. – Ellin & Tucker, a mid-Atlantic’s leading public accounting and business consulting firm, hosted its 3^rd annual Week of Caring which celebrated and supported some of Baltimore’s most-notable not-for-profit organizations. Baltimore’s deep sense of pride shines the brightest through the city’s incredible family of nonprofit organizations, all working tirelessly to make Charm City stronger. Regardless of the cause or need, there are groups of people committed to making things better for everyone.

This year, the team of volunteers worked with the following Baltimore-area nonprofits:

• Baltimore Humane Society (BHS) is a no kill animal shelter that provides temporary homes, safe refuge, and care for stray, unwanted and homeless animals. BHS also provides low-cost veterinary care to the public and a pet cemetery with grief support services. Additionally, they provide volunteer and educational opportunities for members of the community. Ellin & Tucker employees assisted with cleaning and organizing a stock area that will ultimately keep the animal check out process running smoothly, so deserving pets can go to a loving home faster and with fewer delays.

• The UA House at Fayette serves over 100 students daily from public housing and low income neighborhoods with academic enrichment, health, sports and physical fitness education, and career development. Operated by Living Classrooms, the UA House services were developed as a response to the community’s assessed need for intervention to support the academic and social development of disadvantaged youth by providing year-round out-of-school-time programming for elementary, middle, and high school students living in East Baltimore. This year, Ellin & Tucker volunteers spent the afternoon with more than 80 kids of all ages providing academic support, music education, playing basketball, flying drones, and arts & crafts.

• POWER House Community Center is an after school program that serves approximately 64 children, 92% of which are living in Baltimore’s largest public housing community. Their year-round programming provides services in five core areas: education and career development, character and civic development, health and life skills, arts and culture, and health and wellness. Ellin & Tucker helped organize and oversee 40 children painting a beautiful mural.

• St. Vincent de Paul Baltimore’s Sarah’s Hope House is Baltimore’s largest homeless shelter, with 130 beds. They provide meals, youth activities and tutoring, adult education classes, housing placement, referrals and more to homeless families in Baltimore city. Ellin & Tucker volunteers hosted a pizza party and played bingo with 30 residents.

For more than 70 years, Ellin & Tucker has been committed to giving back to the community they call home. In 2008, Ellin & Tucker formed the Giving Back Committee, devoted to supporting Baltimore and the groups who continuously work to strengthen Charm City. In 2015, the committee started the “Week of Caring”, selecting various regional nonprofits to focus their support.

“Giving back is part of who we are,” said Kim Fusco, who created the Giving Back Committee 10 years ago. “I’m proud to see the employees working together to benefit the community where we live and support the organizations who are working endlessly every day, year after year, to make Baltimore a better place to live.”

“As a member of the Ellin & Tucker Giving Back Committee, I had the opportunity to coordinate our day at The UA House,” said Ellin & Tucker Associate Scott Carpenter, “Through the help of the incredible staff at The UA House (Living Classrooms), we were able to plan a day to help out with their afterschool program, which hosts approximately 180 kids every day. We partook in activities like playing basketball, flying drones, playing instruments, and arts & crafts. For a program that is directed towards enriching the lives of the Baltimore City youth, the impact they had on us was surreal.”

“My experience volunteering at the Baltimore Humane Society was my first as an Ellin & Tucker employee. While at the BHS, we met some of the employees, interacted with animals currently available for adoption, and helped clean and organize parts of the facility,” said Associate Mike Berry. “It was a truly rewarding experience and I am grateful to both the BHS and E&T for providing me with the opportunity to genuinely give back to the community in which we work and live. I am already looking forward to next year’s Week of Caring.”
