In an effort to assist individual taxpayers with the economic challenges due to COVID-19, on January 19, 2022, the Comptroller of Maryland announced that the filing and payment deadline for 2021 Maryland resident and non-resident individual income tax returns was postponed to July 15, 2022.
Following this announcement, on February 23, 2022, the Comptroller of Maryland announced that the filing and payment deadline for 2022 Maryland individual Q1 and Q2 estimated income tax payments will also be postponed to July 15, 2022. This postponement applies to both resident and non-resident MD taxpayers, like the filing and payment deadline mentioned above.
According to the Comptroller’s office, Maryland taxpayers do not need to request the postponements, as they will be granted automatically to all resident and non-resident filers. However, taxpayers who expect to receive a refund should file their return as soon as possible and not wait until July 15th to submit. These postponements apply only to individuals and do not include entities, trusts, or other types of taxes at this time.
On the federal side, despite the IRS warning the public of processing delays for the upcoming tax season, the agency has not announced any plans to postpone the federal income tax filing and payment deadline or the individual Q1 and Q2 estimated income tax payments.
